With our hectic schedules, massage therapy is no longer a luxury. All the intricate systems of your body work together to do one simple task: keep itself in balance. When your body is overwhelmed by stress, poor diet, lack of exercise, emotional upset or any number of other problems, that balance is easily lost. Therapeutic massage helps to release toxins from the body, and once removed, your body can regain its balance, which in turn boosts the immune system, improves circulation and organ function, and helps to restore you to optimum health.
Neuromuscular Therapy (NMT) is a specialized form of massage therapy. A NMT therapist is educated in the physiology of the nervous system and its effect on the muscular and skeletal systems. The NMT bodyworker also is educated in kinesiology and biomechanics.
Neuromuscular Therapy is the utilization of static pressure on specific myofascial points to relieve pain. This technique manipulates the soft tissue of the body (muscles, tendons and connective tissue) to balance the central nervous system. In a healthy individual, nerves transmit impulses (which are responsible for every movement, function and thought) to the body very slowly. Injury, trauma, postural distortion or stress cause nerves to speed up their transmission, inhibiting equilibrium and making the body vulnerable to pain and dysfunction.
It is therefore necessary to stabilize low levels of neurological activity to maintain normal function and overall health.
Building on the principles of Joseph Pilates, the Pilates method of exercise develops a strong “core”, or center of the body. Control of the core is achieved by integrating the trunk, pelvis and shoulder girdle. In many conventional workouts, weak muscles tend to get weaker and strong muscles tend to get stronger. The result is muscular imbalance. This imbalance can lead to injury and potentially chronic pain in the back as well as other parts of the body.
Pilates exercises train several muscle groups simultaneously in smooth, precise, continuous movements. By developing proper technique, you can re-train your body to move in safer, more efficient patterns of motion, which is invaluable for injury recovery, sports performance, improved posture and optimal health. Reformer sessions can be held at Perfect Form Pilates or Dancing Moon Pilates. Pricing for private reformer sessions and small class format are available upon request.
Yoga can help improve your overall strength, balance, physical appearance, mental clarity and help you deal with stress more effectively. It is both a philosophy and a spiritual practice that does not subscribe nor promote any particular faith. Many people are reluctant to take a class because they are unfamiliar with the postures, or asanas. Others need to have a specialized program designed for them to overcome a physical challenge. Finally, some people don’t have the time to go to a class and may want to learn some postures they can do in the comfort of their homes. We can discuss your specific needs and design a program that works for you.
